What is henna made of?
Henna is a natural plant dye, which stains an orange to reddish-brown color. The leaves of the Lawsonia inermis (henna plant) plant are ground up into a fine powder which is then mixed most commonly and safely with water, lemon, and various essential oils. This mixture (henna paste) is then left out (in open air) to oxidize and release the dye molecules.
Natural, unadulterated henna is extremely safe, and has been used as a natural form of body art for thousands of years.
